XI FORUM FOR IBERIAN STUDIES

Tickling the Iberian Funny Bone.

Ideas of Fun in the Iberian Mind.

UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD

From the the Arcipreste de Hita and the "cantigas d'escarnio e maldizer" to La Trinca’s satirical songs, humour in the Iberian Peninsula has been a rather serious business. Unintentional or deliberate, embedded in a graver context or just a good laugh for its own sake: fun, humour, mirth, irony, sarcasm, glee, merriment and hilarity modulate Iberian culture and punctuate our everyday language and attitudes with more or less successful punches. The Galician retranca, the Andalusian cachondeo, the Catalan conya, are just part of an endless stream of risa, burlas, bromas, agudeza, ironia, sarcasmo and humoradas.

But what does that tell us about ourselves? What (and whom) do we laugh at? And… why on earth are we being laughed at? And… is there a distinctly Iberian sense of humour? Can we find a common flavour that connects Cervantes and Mendicutti, Lazarillo de Tormes and Fernando Esteso and Funes, Les Luthiers and Quevedo, Forges and Gómez de la Serna?

Do we, indeed, laugh with a shared accent?

We welcome contributions from areas such a literary and cultural studies, philosophy, film studies, media studies and linguistics, amongst others. Papers can be submitted in English or any of the romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula.
